English is the common language of New Zealand. Unlike some countries like UK for example, there is a little difference in accents from one part of the country to another, however you may detect a Scottish accent in the southern half of the South Island and other locations where confined to a small area was particularly strong. In terms of the English written form, New Zealand tends to follow the British rather than U.S Spellings. As with other countries New Zealand has developed its own slang words and phrases, a selection of these can be viewed in our Speaking Kiwi post under New Zealand facts.
