Attractions

  • Visit the Hot water beach ? a beautiful white sandy beach surrounded by native pohutukawa trees where you can dig your very own hot pool
  • Take one of the Glass bottom Boats and enjoy Cathedral Cove, Stunning coastal scenery, marine wildlife and even try your dab at snorkelling. These boats depart at 10.30am & 1.30pm from Whitianga wharf.
  • Te Whanganui-A-Hei (Cathedral Cove) Marine Reserve
  • 309 Kauri Grove ? a group of Kauri Trees
  • Enjoy panoramic views of Slipper Island, Alderman Islands and Mayor Island from the top of Paku Hill, Tairua
  • Wentworth Valley offers several walks including a 2hour Waterfall walk near Whangamata. You will need to craoss the stream a couple of times though.
  • Visit one of the many museums where the Coromandel?s history is captured.
  • Take a guided tour into the bush to view the bits and pieces of the gold mining age.

Did you know

  • Captain Cook visited the area in 1769 and observed the journey of the planet Mercury across the face of the sun and that is why some of the beaches around Coromandel region are called Mercury Bay and Cook’s Beach.
  • The natural hot water springs at hot water beach was created by volcanic activity and it can reach a temperature as hot as 75 degrees Celsius
