Matamata – home of Hobbiton
Matamata is a rural town in Waikato. Matamata is also known as the home of Hobbiton, because this was one of the locations for filming the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Visit the town of Matamata where you can go on the popular Hobbiton Movie Set tour, Lord of the Rings. Buy your tickets and catch the tour from the Matamata Information Office right in the centre of town.
This is a Must See for all Tolkien fans, and is en-route from Auckland to Rotorua. There are lots to do including a variety of walking and tramping options, golf courses, and a wide range of Cafés such as the Kaimai Cheese Café, and accommodation options such as the Opal Hot Springs and Holiday Park.
If you’re more for adventure then you might want to try your hand at tandem skydiving, gliding or sky diving and if you’re travelling with kids then they may enjoy a farm day at Strathellon Alpacas where you will get to meet the intelligent, loveable alpacas. They are located on 276 Matai Road.
