<p>This is a Must See for all Tolkien fans, and is en-route from Auckland to Rotorua. There are lots to do including a variety of walking and tramping options, golf courses, and a wide range of Cafés such as the Kaimai Cheese Café, and accommodation options such as the Opal Hot Springs and Holiday Park.</p>
<p>If you’re more for adventure then you might want to try your hand at tandem skydiving, gliding or sky diving and if you’re travelling with kids then they may enjoy a farm day at Strathellon Alpacas where you will get to meet the intelligent, loveable alpacas. They are located on 276 Matai Road.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>See the regions unique history by visiting the Waikato museum of Art and History open daily from 10am – 4:30pm.<br />
The museum was established in 1987 and is one of Hamilton’s biggest and more extraordinary buildings.  The person who designed the museum was Ivan Mercep of JASMaD, Auckland, the same architect who designed Wellington’s museum, Te Papa.<br />
The museum has five levels and 12 galleries and overlooks the river on the corner of Victoria and Grantham streets.</p>
<p>Inside you will find a large collection of New Zealand art, history of Waikato and of the local Tainui people (a river tribe). In the midst of all the Maori treasures, is the delicately decorated war canoe Te Wainika, which was presented to the museum in 1973 by Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu, the Maori Queen. <br />
There is also a cafe inside the museum so you can relax and enjoy a spot of lunch.</p>
<p>Entry to the museum is free however donations are welcome.</p>

Paid parking is available next to and on the street around the Waikato Museum. There is also a parking building on Hood Street, within easy walking distance of the Waikato Museum.</p>

<p>There will be various stages located within the venue, as well as two beach front stages, providing continuous live music and entertainment.</p>
<p>The event is liquor free; however you will be able to purchase alcoholic beverages in certain areas only an. Food and drink stalls will be available inside the venue.</p>

<h2>Orewa Beach</h2>
<p>Orewa is a great place to stop and have a bite to eat before starting out on your journey again. It has 3km of fantastic sandy beach and playground area for the kids.</p>
<h2>Warkworth</h2>
<p>Located on the banks of the Mahurangi River, Warkworth is a lovely town where you can enjoy the surf beaches, vineyards, marine sanctuaries and wildlife.</p>
<p>Visit the Walkworth riverwalk where you can feed the birds and the Museum inside the Parry Kauri Park situated on Tudor Collins drive.</p>
<h2>Pakiri Beach</h2>
<p>Upon arriving at Wellsford stop for a bite to eat or follow the signs towards Pakiri beach – a stunning beach with white sands and crystal clear waters, native bush and wildlife. Enjoy horse rides along the beach or enjoy some kayaking, swimming or surfing before heading back onto the main highway.</p>
<h2>Twin Coast Discovery Highway</h2>
<p>Follow the Twin Coast Discovery Highway towards Mangawhai where you will come across some stunning beaches including Mangawhai Heads, Langs beach and Waipu Cove, a popular surf beach.<br />
Come back to SH1 passing through Waipu and carry on to another stunning surf beach at Ruakaka. You may want to stop at Marsden Point (New Zealand&#8217;s only oil refinery)<br />
Back on SH1 continue on to <a href="http://no1guide.co.nz/destination/twin-coast-discovery-52.html" target="_self">Northland&#8217;s</a> only city, Whangarei</p>
<h2>Whangarei</h2>
<p>The following places are a must see in Whangarei before heading back to Auckland.</p>
<p><strong>Town Basin</strong> &#8211; There is a huge children’s play area which is also a great spot for a picnic in hot summers. A huge sail covers the play area so you can enjoy a picnic on the grass edge while the kids have fun playing.</p>
<p><strong>Whangarei falls</strong> – visit the most photographed falls in New Zealand.</p>
<p><strong>Kauri Park</strong> – see the largest famous kauri tree in New Zealand (over 500 years old)</p>
<p><strong>Fudge farm</strong> – Taste New Zealand’s old fashioned creamy fudge, the creamiest fudge made in new Zealand that is made 100% by hand.</p>
<p><strong>Mount Parahaki</strong> &#8211; You can see fine views of the city and harbour at the top of this hill situated on Memorial drive. At 242 meters high the hill can be climbed either by car or on foot.</p>

<p>Treble Cone is the biggest ski area in the South Island of New Zealand and is the winner of the Peoples Choice New Zealand Ski Area Service Award 2006. It has the highest vertical drop in South Island at 700 metres and stunning views across over Lake Wanaka and Mt Aspiring.</p>
<p>Treble Cone continues to keep improving its facilities for instance, in 2008 there were major developments to improve trails in the Saddle Basin as well as new snow guns and snow fencing. In addition there is a new program for beginners boarders called Burton Learn to Ride.</p>
<p>A 6 seater express chairlift is the main lift riding people from the base area to ski the big cruises of the main bowl.</p>
<p>Skiers and boarders can enjoy plenty of exciting groomed terrain, including four popular runs: Easy Rider, Skite, Main Street and Rafills Run. The beginners area is a wide, gentle slope serviced by the Nice ‘n Easy platter lift and a magic carpet. There are also plenty of trails to challenge the more expert skiers and boarders.</p>
<p>For kids there is a junior ski school with a good program. In addition there is childcare facilities offering a supervised indoor facility for kids three years and over.</p>
<p>There is daily return shuttl services from Wanaka and Queenstown.</p>

<p>There is a designated area for beginner’s skiers called &#8216;Half Pint Park&#8217; designed to help riders development into the freestyle world of snowboarding and skiing.</p>
<p>Night Skiing is a new feature opened in 2008 which is open only on Tuesday and Friday during July and August from 5pm – 9pm.</p>
<p>On field accommodation is provide comprising of bunkroom and luxury apartment accommodation.</p>
