Ski Resort

Mt Cheeseman is the first ski club to be established in the south island and is the second closest ski area to Christchurch just 1 hours drive from Methven Mt Hutt Village. The club became know as Cheeseman although infact the current ski field was on Mount Cockayne in the Craigieburn range 111km west of Christchurch.

Mt Cheeseman is a club field with open rolling terrain, T-bars, groomed runs and a new day lodge up on the mountain called Snowline Lodge. Alternatively there is a backpackers accommodation at Forest Lodge at the bottom of the access road.

It has great beginner and intermediate slopes and is perfect for learners and families.
Carparking is a few hundred metres below the ski area; however there is a convenient drop-off zone beside the first T-bar. One of the two T Bars provides access to intermediate slopes and second Tow offers great off-piste conditions and provides a ride to tougher terrain such as A Basin.

If you are daring and want to see some backcountry then you may want to drop into Tarn Basin. However you must check in with ski patrol if you intend on heading out of bounds, as Tarn Basin is not patrolled. It also requires a walk back to the lifts.
