When to Ski in New Zealand

The skiing and snowboarding season begins in June and runs till October and the best times to ski are usually July and August outside of school holidays.  If you plan a vacation during the school holidays then it can get really busy and crowded as skiing is a popular activity in winter.

The coldest months are June and July.  August is the peak time in which to ski as it’s when the Kiwis and Ozzies ski, and September and October offer a range of skiing, from spring skiing conditions to wintery powder – depending on the weather.

If you plan to go towards the end of September to beginning of October you will find many of the snow fields in the South Island may close or run out of snow. The best option if travelling around that time would be to ski Mt Ruapehau as it has higher altitude therefore has a tendency to have a longer season than the mountains on the South Island due to lower altitude. Also this is a good time to go if you don’t want there to be much crowd on the snow.
