Driving in New Zealand
So you are someone that would prefer to drive around the country yourself? Good Choice. driving in New Zealand is usually easy compared to most other western countries. The roads are good and not crowded, congestion is rare, and speeding and careless driving is uncommon. Before you start your journey, please make yourself familiar with New Zealand’s Road Rules.
Before you can drive a vehicle in New Zealand you must hold a valid drivers license and you must carry this at all times when driving. A valid drivers license means a license that is valid in your home country, or even an international driving permit or drivers license that is current for one year from the date of issue. If you fail to comply with this then you can be fined $400 when stopped by the police. Always carry your drivers license with you when you drive. If you are in any doubt about your license then you can always check with the NZ embassy.
